BLUE HALKIDIKI 2021-2023
A FEW WORDS ABOUT "BLUE HALKIDIKI"
The idea of Blue Halkidiki was born out of the need to clean the marine ecosystem from the ever-increasing waste caused by human activity.
From 2021, when the project was first organised, until 2023, we managed to carry out 19 expeditions where we collected almost 11 tons of litter from the seabed and coastal areas of the Toronean Gulf. Over 1000 single-use plastics, hundreds of cigarette butts, 2 garbage bins, 15 car tyres and fishing equipment were found and removed.
The public response was remarkable as from 2021 to 2023, over 550 volunteers and members of the Greek Eco Project generously gave their help to carry out the clean-ups. For the underwater clean-ups, 12 professional divers helped, while the coastal clean-ups did not lack small volunteers.
Our scientific partners, the research institute INALE, were also on our side, carrying out research alongside the clean-ups, so that there were tangible results to support the need for action. Of course, the presence of the photographer Nicolas Samaras was also important, as he captured the seabed and we were able to show the general public the current situation.
Of course, all this effort would not have been possible without the financial support of our sponsors as Blue Halkidiki is based entirely on private initiative.
Marine pollution is of greater importance and it concerns us all.
So let’s all make the sea BLUE AGAIN!
THE GOAL
BLUE HALKIDIKI
This 3 words fully cover the objective of BLUE HALKIDIKI.
Raising awareness and informing the world about marine pollution is the most important purpose for which we organize and voluntarily participate in this great effort.
However, motivation is the result of proper information and awareness, because to help the planet, practical actions are needed.
Το BLUE HALKIDIKI however, has another very strong goal, the promotion of Halkidiki as a destination of special ecological interest.
Of course, through these actions, a valuable opportunity is created for researching the seabed of Halkidiki, mapping it and getting to know the marine life of the Toroneos gulf and what kind of finds and waste are found on the seabed and on the coast.
